Victoria is the leading state when it comes to information and communications technology and to validate this sentiment the Australian Federal Government announced today that Melbourne will be the ‘nerve centre’ for the NBNs mainland network operations.
Consisting of more than 700 new jobs, 425 to be employed at the new National Operations and Test Facility at Docklands and a further 290 at the company’s Engineering and Operations group in the Melbourne CBD precinct, it is understood that a 4000 Sqm office space will become operational as early as next year. Launching the new facility will be none other than the Victorian Premier John Brumby and the Minister for Communications and Broadband Stephen Conroy.
The Australian National Broadband Network has been described as the biggest project since the Snowy Hydro Scheme and will connect 90% of Homes, Businesses and Educational institutions using 100 megabit high speed fibre-to-the-premises broadband over an 8 year period.
